Ebrahim Zolfaghari, spokesperson for Iran’s Khatam Al Anbiya Central Headquarters, said in a televised address on Saturday that Iranian forces targeted the Ayn al-Asad Airbase and Israeli missile defence radar systems.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran’s full effort is to ensure the security of the Strait of Hormuz and prevent any harm to regional countries,” the spokesperson asserted.
He claimed that Iran’s attacks on Israel’s missile defence radar systems have ‘severely weakened’ the state’s air defence capabilities.
“The sky over the occupied territories is under the powerful roar of Iranian missiles and drones,” the spokesperson said.
On Friday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt claimed that US forces sunk over 30 Iranian vessels, declaring Iran’s Navy ‘combat ineffective.’ Leavitt also alleged that Iranian ballistic missile strikes targeting Israel and US assets in the Gulf ‘are now down 90%.’
Tensions escalated in the Middle East after the United States and Israel launched joint military operations against Iran on February 28, with President Donald Trump vowing to “raze their missile industry to the ground”.
Tehran said it was responding with strikes on Israel and US assets in the region, with explosions reported in countries right across the Gulf region. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was confirmed dead in a strike on Saturday.
The escalations follow three recent rounds of nuclear talks between Iranian and American officials, one held in Muscat and two in Geneva.
