People in Tehran expressed unity and support for the newly appointed Iranian Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, moments after the announcement by the Assembly of Experts. Footage shows people chanting slogans in support of the new leader and denouncing the US and Israel. Vanak Square in northern Tehran erupted in jubilation as crowds waved Iranian flags. The Assembly of Experts announced on Sunday evening that Mojtaba Khamenei had been appointed and introduced as the third leader of the Islamic Republic by a ‘conclusive vote of the representatives’, Iranian state media said. Mojtaba Khamenei is the second son of the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a joint US-Israeli airstrike on February 28. US President Donald Trump has said that the next Iranian leader would not ‘last long’ if elected with US approval.
