Donald Trump slammed his NATO ‘allies’ for refusing to help him with the Strait of Hormuz

Donald Trump slammed his NATO ‘allies’ for refusing to help him with the Strait of Hormuz, speaking alongside Irish Taoiseach Micheal Martin in DC on Tuesday.

Most U.S. allies including NATO members, the UK, Australia, Japan, and Germany—have not answered his calls for naval support, leaving the U.S. largely isolated in its effort.

“Well, we don’t need too much help, and we don’t need any help, actually. In fact, we just put out a notice. I was watching over the last couple of weeks, and all of our NATO allies were very much in favour of what we did,” he said.

“I think NATO is making a very foolish mistake,” he went on. “So everyone agrees with us, but they don’t want to help. And we, you know, we as the United States have to remember that, because we think it’s pretty shocking,”

The US and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28. Tehran responded with strikes on Israel and US assets in the region. The conflict soon widened to Israel and Hezbollah trading strikes across the border with Lebanon too.

According to the most recent figures, the Iranian side has reported over 1,400 dead, with 13 deaths of military personnel admitted by the US side and up to 15 on the Israeli side.

The conflict has seen surging oil prices around the globe. Trump called on NATO countries to help keep the Strait of Hormuz open – before later saying ‘we don’t need anybody’ after revealing he’d been ‘informed by most of our allies that they don’t want to get involved’.

Iranian FM Abbas Araghchi has said the Strait – which handles around 20 per cent of global oil traffic – “is open to friends and non-hostile countries, but closed to enemies and those who collaborate with them.”
