Russia Reveals Sarmat

Russian President Vladimir Putin revealed that the cutting-edge Sarmat missile has a range of tens of thousands of kilometres – with a unique flight path allowing it to evade all modern air defence systems – speaking in Moscow on Tuesday.

It came as Russia published footage of the latest successful test launch.

“We started working on it in 2011,”Putin recalled. “It is the most powerful missile system in the world.”

Missile Range Claims

“The total power of the warhead is more than four times the power of any existing most powerful existing Western counterpart. Secondly – and this is most crucial – the missile can travel not only along a ballistic, but also a suborbital trajectory, which allows it to exceed its range of over 35,000 kilometres, with simultaneously doubled accuracy characteristics and with the capability to overcome all existing and future missile defence systems. By the end of this year, Sarmat will be put on combat duty,” he added.

The president revealed that two unique nuclear-powered systems are also in the final stages of development: the ‘Poseidon’ unmanned underwater vehicle and the ‘Burevestnik’ global-range cruise missile.

He also said that the medium-range ground-based ‘Oreshnik’ missile system was already on combat duty and can “also be equipped with nuclear warheads.”

Powerful Nuclear Systems

Sarmat is believed to be the world’s most powerful 5th generation missile. According to Moscow, the weapon is capable of delivering a staggering combined yield of 7.5 megatons anywhere on the planet – and of defeating the most advanced air defence systems. It can also be used to deliver a number of ‘Avangard’ hypersonic glide vehicles.

It was developed by the JSC Makeyev Design Bureau in collaboration with industry partners. The first successful launch of the RS-27 Sarmat took place on April 20, 2022 at the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in the Arkhangelsk region.
