Mexico Offers Support
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Monday that her government is willing to host Iran’s national team during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, after US refused to allow the team staying overnight in their territory.

According to Sheinbaum, Iran is scheduled to play all three of its group-stage matches in the US, but American authorities reportedly do not want the team based there between games.
Tijuana Hosting Plan
Speaking to reporters from Mexico City, Sheinbaum said Mexico was approached about the possibility of accommodating the Iranian squad and agreed without hesitation.

“They asked us if they can stay overnight in Mexico. And we said yes, there is no problem, we have no issue with it. So, they are looking for the venue to be in Tijuana, so that they can stay overnight and travel to the games that will take place in the United States. So, we have no reason to deny them the possibility of staying in Mexico,” stated the Mexican leader.
The proposal would likely see the Iranian team based in Tijuana, just across the border from Southern California, allowing players and staff to travel to matches in the US while staying on Mexican soil.
World Cup Challenges
The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, is expected to present several logistical and diplomatic challenges as dozens of nations travel across North America for the expanded tournament.
