Protest Before Summit
Demonstrators gathered in Istanbul on Saturday to protest against NATO ahead of the alliance’s summit, accusing the bloc of fuelling wars, militarisation and social inequality.

“NATO is a war machine,” protester Yucel Demirer said. “Every penny spent on war is taken away from education, healthcare and workers’ tables. Under the guise of promoting peace and stability, NATO has normalised war.”
March Through Istanbul
Footage shows protesters carrying anti-NATO banners, waving flags and an effigy of US President Donald Trump as they march through the city under heavy police presence. Placards were seen bearing slogans such as ‘Imperialist war organisation NATO and Trump, you are not welcome!’ and ‘The collaborators are as guilty as the killers!’, among others.

Protesters argued that rising military spending comes at the expense of public services and condemned NATO’s role in conflicts across the Middle East and beyond.
Criticism Of Spending
Another demonstrator, Demet Koc, criticised the Turkish government for prioritising defence spending while refusing to raise the minimum wage, accusing NATO member states of contributing to conflicts in Gaza, Iran and elsewhere.
The demonstration comes ahead of the Ankara NATO Summit scheduled from July 7 to 8.
