US-Iran Dispute

Iran warned on Friday it could abandon its commitments under the US-Iran memorandum if Washington continues what Tehran described as repeated violations of the agreement.

“Should the United States continue to violate its obligations under the MoU, Iran will no longer be bound to fulfil its obligations under the MoU,” Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, told reporters at the UN headquarters.

The Iranian envoy said Tehran remained committed to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, provided Washington fully honoured its own commitments.

Iravani accused the United States of breaching the agreement by launching military attacks on Iranian territory, including strikes on southern cities and several islands in the Persian Gulf on July 7 and 8.

“The United States bears full international responsibility for all legal and political consequences arising from its unlawful action,” he emphasised.

Hormuz Warning

Turning to the Strait of Hormuz, Iravani said responsibility for reopening the waterway and carrying out demining operations rested exclusively with Iran under the memorandum.

He warned that attempts by outside powers to establish separate arrangements would violate the agreement, delay the return of commercial shipping and drive up regional tensions.

The United States said its latest strikes followed attacks on commercial vessels in the strait. Tehran has not claimed responsibility for those strikes.

Iravani also called on the UN secretary-general and Security Council to take what he described as ‘effective and decisive measures’ to halt US military action and prevent further escalation.

Nuclear Programme

His comments followed a Security Council session on Iran’s nuclear programme, where France, the United Kingdom and the United States raised allegations about Tehran’s compliance with its non-proliferation commitments.

“Iran categorically rejects the politically motivated allegations made today by France, UK and US regarding its peaceful nuclear programme,” Iravani commented.

“Their claims are a deliberate attempt to distort resolution 2231, misrepresent the facts and misuse the Security Council for narrow political purposes,” he alleged.

Tehran and Washington signed a memorandum of understanding on June 17, establishing a ceasefire and launching a first round of negotiations in Switzerland aimed at reaching a final agreement. Both sides have since accused each other of violating the agreement.
