Hostage Situation Unfolds
Police deployed to a Rewe supermarket in Berlin’s Marienfelde district on Saturday after a man allegedly took a female employee hostage inside the store.
Footage shows police and emergency vehicles outside the supermarket, with the area cordoned off as officers speak to people near the scene.

Elia, a part-time employee at the store, recalled seeing the suspect carrying a knife before fleeing with a colleague and calling the police.
“Everything happened very quickly,” he recalled. “I saw the knife and immediately thought, ‘Okay, I’m out of here.'”
Employee Recalls Chaos
Elia noted that other employees had been in greater danger and that staff were later kept in the changing rooms for several hours.
“We don’t have any updates either. We know just as little as you do, really,” he told reporters. “The only thing I can say for sure is that he definitely had a knife.”
He added that the supermarket had just closed and that the suspect appeared to have been the final customer, although he could not confirm whether the man deliberately remained inside until closing time.

Elia said he could not describe the suspect because everything had happened ‘very quickly’. “I just remember seeing this large, shiny knife,” he recounted.
“Personally, I’m okay. But I can imagine that the employee who’s still inside is probably in a terrible state of shock, which is completely understandable,” the witness shared.
Police Continue Negotiations
Police reported that they were in contact with the hostage-taker and were working to resolve the incident peacefully. Authorities confirmed there was no indication that anyone else remained inside the supermarket and no danger to nearby residents.
The suspect’s motive and the condition of the hostage remain unknown as the police operation continues.
