Major Landslide Hits Chongqing
Pengshui Miao and Tujia Autonomous County in Chongqing, southwestern China was struck by a major landslide on Friday morning, which buried a number of homes.
Footage shows the extent of the destruction caused to buildings along a section of the Wujiang River, as police moved to cordon off the danger zone for emergency responders to perform rescue and recovery operations as Chinese emergency management authorities declared a level two response.
Rescue Operations Continue
Community workers reportedly raised the alarm when they noticed rocks falling down the hillside at 08.00 local time (00.00 GMT), triggering an evacuation of over 60 nearby residents. Reports added that a section of the mountain collapsed at 09.08 (01.08 GMT), burying around a dozen buildings below with rocks and earth, while the evacuation was still underway.
Local authorities said that hundreds of responders have been deployed and nine people had been rescued, none of whom had suffered life-threatening injuries. Further information on casualties or the missing is expected, as recovery efforts continue at the scene.
Severe Weather Concerns
This follows weeks of severe weather which triggered flood warnings, caused by thunderstorms and high temperatures.
In mid-May, another landslide in Chongqing’s Yongchuan district caused at least 20 deaths.
