Fire Destroys Indigenous Village
An indigenous community in Indonesia’s West Java province has been devastated by a fire that torched dozens of homes, displacing more than 150 residents and destroying key heritage buildings on Sunday.
Footage shows flames racing through Kasepuhan Cipta Mulya Indigenous Village in Sukabumi Regency, destroying historic buildings, houses and power grid infrastructure, while thick smoke surrounds the area.
Residents are seen scrambling to fill buckets with water and douse burning haystacks before firefighters arrive to battle the blaze alongside local volunteers.
Residents Displaced After Blaze
Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) said the fire charred 51 homes, affecting 159 people from 51 households. Of those displaced, 132 are staying with relatives, while 27 are being housed in emergency tents.
The blaze also destroyed houses of worship, a preschool, public sanitation facilities, and traditional rice barns and mills used by the indigenous community.
Relief Efforts Underway
Authorities suspect the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit.
Officials said the fire has been extinguished and debris clearance is underway. Emergency shelters, field kitchens and relief supplies have been set up to support affected residents.
