Grass Fires Spread Across London
Grass fires scorched more than 12 hectares (30 acres) of land across east London, as the capital joined more than half of England in being officially declared in drought on Wednesday after weeks of hot, dry weather.
Footage shows thick plumes of smoke billowing from grassland in Romford into the surrounding skyline, creating a haze over urban buildings.
The London Fire Brigade said around 60 firefighters and eight fire engines tackled a blaze near Southern Way, where 1.6 hectares (four acres) of grassland were destroyed.
Fire Crews Battle Flames
A second fire near Eastern Avenue West burned around 12 hectares on both sides of the road, with another 60 firefighters deployed to the scene.
Station Commander Ryan Kerby declared crews worked ‘tirelessly in arduous conditions’ to bring the fire under control and protect nearby properties.
According to Havering Council, it is working with the fire brigade, police and other agencies to establish the cause.
Drought Raises Fire Risks
The fires broke out on the same day the Environment Agency declared London and six other regions of England to be in drought.
Officials said weeks of hot, dry weather have put increasing pressure on water supplies while raising the risk of fast-moving grass and wildfires.
