Kyiv Protesters Demand Government Transparency

Ukrainian protesters gathered in central Kiev for another night of protests on Sunday, demanding greater transparency and dialogue from President Volodymyr Zelensky’s government.

Footage shows protesters gathered around a fountain, with people sitting nearby as speakers address the crowd.

“The main thing is people’s trust in the state, in the army. There should be no lies. There should be no lies at all,” one protester said. “In this way, the country can be prepared for any challenges that still lie ahead.”

Another protester called for elections to be held despite the ongoing conflict, claiming the government was avoiding a vote because it feared losing support.

“Somehow a mechanism must be devised to do this, because the people are already dissatisfied, and so are the youth,” she said.

This comes after weeks of nationwide demonstrations calling for the reinstatement of former Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.

Former Defence Minister Dispute

Fedorov’s sacking last month resulted in huge protests. He also accused the government of corruption, arguing that it had far-reaching effects during times of conflict.

Zelensky later offered Fedorov the post of deputy prime minister for military innovation, but Fedorov rejected the offer.

Yevhenii Khmara, a former senior Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) officer who briefly served as acting head of the agency, took over the defence portfolio this week.

His appointment came hours after Fedorov, who was removed as defence minister in July after around six months in the post, demanded elections and an end to government ‘corruption’. Elections have been suspended under martial law since its conflict with Russia began in February 2022.

Ukraine Faces Corruption Scrutiny

The new defence minister also takes office as Ukrainian authorities face fresh scrutiny over corruption. Anti-corruption authorities announced charges against a deputy chief of Zelensky’s office on Wednesday in connection with an alleged $3 million money-laundering scheme.
