Malaysia Celebrates 69th Merdeka

More than 100,000 people packed Putrajaya on Monday as Malaysia marked its 69th National Day, also known as Merdeka, with a huge military and civic parade celebrating the country’s independence.

Footage shows military personnel, police, emergency services and civilian groups marching through the administrative capital, alongside armoured vehicles and other military equipment.

Performers are later seen dancing and waving Malaysian flags as crowds line the parade route.

“To me, August 31 means that we are free to make our own choices, free to learn, our children are free to pursue their education, and we are free to do what we want, as long as we respect the laws and the Constitution of the country,” a spectator said.

“Merdeka means you have the freedom, the freedom to choose, the freedom to live your life to the fullest, especially in a multiracial country, and we are in harmony together,” another added.

Huge Parade Draws Crowds

King Sultan Ibrahim and Queen Raja Zarith Sofiah attended the celebrations at Dataran Putrajaya alongside Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and other senior officials.

The parade brought together 10,819 participants from 76 contingents and 22 marching bands, as well as 328 land, sea and air assets.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said more than 100,000 people attended, surpassing an initial target of 80,000.

Freedom And Unity Celebrated

The celebration carried the theme ‘Malaysia MADANI: Kesejahteraan Dinikmati’, or ‘Malaysia MADANI: Shared Prosperity’.

National Day commemorates the Federation of Malaya’s independence from British colonial rule on August 31, 1957, with Malaysia marking the 69th anniversary this year.
