Palestinian Detainees Reach Gaza
Thirteen released Palestinian detainees arrived at Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, on Monday after crossing into the territory via Kerem Shalom.
Footage shows Red Cross vehicles and buses arriving, as families wait for their relatives before embracing them as they step off.
One of those released, Ahmed al-Ashra, alleged he had been mistreated in Israeli detention and showed signs of what he said was abuse.
“Food was hard to come by, and we were in danger. We slept on metal beds – I slept on one for 30 days. I spent 15 days in a cell with my hands bound,” he said.
Families Welcome Released Detainees
Rami Afifi was among those waiting for relatives to arrive.
“We are waiting with great anticipation and hope. My brother-in-law, Ali Abu Hammad, was arrested 35 days ago at a school in Mawasi Rafah and detained,” he said.
There was no Israeli comment on the release at the time of publication.
The latest arrivals follow the release of another 35 Palestinians earlier this month, who were also brought to Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis under the supervision of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
Gaza War Toll Continues Rising
The war between Israel and Hamas erupted on October 7, 2023, after attacks carried out by Hamas killed 1,139 people, most of them Israeli civilians, and more than 200 others were abducted.
In response, the Israeli military launched a wide-scale campaign on the Gaza Strip, including air strikes and a ground offensive, which had killed 73,454 Palestinians and wounded 174,486 others at the time of publication.
Trump announced in late July that the Peace Council had reached an agreement on disarming Hamas and armed factions in the Gaza Strip, explaining that implementation would take place in stages, including an Israeli troop withdrawal and the deployment of an international stabilisation force that, together with a new Palestinian police force, would take over security in the enclave. Israel, however, declared its rejection of the plan.
