In a thrilling blend of technology and combat sports, China hosted its inaugural humanoid robot kickboxing tournament on May 25, 2025, as part of the CMG World Robot Competition: Mecha Fighting Series.

Held in Zhejiang province, the futuristic event featured four remote-controlled Unitree G1 robots squaring off in a full-fledged ring.
High-Tech Fighters with Human Guidance
The G1 robots, developed by Hangzhou-based Unitree Robotics, stood 132 cm tall and weighed 35 kg.

While they appeared autonomous, each was actually controlled by human operators using joysticks and voice commands.

Despite their clunky footwork and occasional stumbles, the robots executed punches, uppercuts, and kicks—powered by AI models trained on real human fighters. Unitree’s team used motion capture data from professional kickboxers to help the robots mimic realistic combat moves.
Tournament Format and Scoring System
The event unfolded in two stages: a martial arts demonstration and a three-round kickboxing match, with each round lasting two minutes. Points were awarded based on:
-
1 point for punches to the head or body
-
3 points for clean kicks
-
A 5-point deduction for falls
-
A 10-point penalty if a robot failed to stand within eight seconds, ending the round

Footage aired on CCTV10 showed robots exchanging blows and occasionally toppling over as they battled in front of cheering spectators.
China’s Glimpse Into the Future of Combat Sports
The tournament’s winner was controlled by Chinese tech influencer Lu Xin, who outperformed the others with more accurate and dynamic moves. Although the matches were not without technical hiccups, they marked a significant leap in integrating robotics into live entertainment.

Event organizers hinted at future competitions with improved balance and realism. As AI-guided machines become more agile and interactive, audiences may see a whole new form of e-sports and physical performance unfold.
From martial arts training to robotics innovation, the event signals a bold new direction for both sport and science.
