Hundreds of people marched the streets of Barcelona on Saturday to rally in support of Venezuela and Cuba amid the United States oil blockade on Havana and capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.

Footage shows protesters chanting while holding Venezuelan and Cuban flags as well as banners and signs such as ‘Venezuela, you are not alone.’

and ‘Enough imperialist aggressions, not in Venezuela nor anywhere’.

“We are here because on January 3, they attacked a country that was not at war, they bombed it, and kidnapped its president. What does this mean? That now they can kidnap any president from anywhere in the world,” a demonstrator said.

Representatives of the Cuban community also denounced the US embargo, calling it a ‘criminal blockade.’

“We are here today denouncing the attack on the sovereignty of Venezuela, denouncing the attack on the sovereignty of Cuba, denouncing the attack on the nations of Latin America by the government of the United States,” another demonstrator said.

“Cubans are also here today to denounce the genocidal, criminal blockade. The most vulnerable people, children, the elderly, and pregnant women are in danger every day because of that criminal and arbitrary measure,” she continued.

The march concluded in front of the diplomatic offices, where a joint manifesto was read in defence of the self-determination of Latin American peoples.

On January 3, the United States launched a military operation in northern Venezuela, known as ‘Operation Absolute Resolve,’ involving airstrikes and ground forces that captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

In the aftermath, disruptions to Venezuela’s fuel exports worsened an energy crisis in Cuba, which had depended heavily on Venezuelan oil supplies.
