A young Lebanese volunteer with Down syndrome is helping prepare meals for families displaced by the ongoing conflict, working at a charity kitchen in Beirut.

Dalii’ al-Ramah assists by carrying bread, preparing wrapping paper and making sandwiches, working alongside a team under the supervision of his brother, Jad.

Jad al-Rimeh, who oversees the initiative, said the kitchen has supported displaced people for two years, with his family, including Dalii’, actively involved throughout.

“Whenever displacement occurs, my family moves here with me, as does my brother Dali, who has always supported me,” Jad said. “This year he has become just like any other team member, playing an essential role.”

He added that his brother shows a strong dedication to helping others while following hygiene and safety standards.

“People with disabilities are just like us. They’re not objects of ridicule or entertainment; they’re active and valuable members of society. The more opportunities you give them, the more they give back,” Jad said.

The volunteer effort comes as Lebanon faces a growing humanitarian crisis more than a month into the regional conflict.

Since March 2, intensified Israeli airstrikes and evacuation orders have displaced more than one million people, around one in five residents, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Displacement has spread from southern areas and the Bekaa Valley to Beirut and northern regions, with numbers continuing to rise.
