President of Cuba Miguel Diaz-Canel thanked Russia for the recent shipment of 100,000 tonnes of fuel and denounced the United States’ energy blockade against his country as a ‘violation of human rights’, during an address to a United Nations conference on Thursday.

“Cuba is a victim of a prolonged collective punishment that aims to force its people to their knees through hunger, disease and severe shortages of basic supplies,” Canel said.

“The 100,000 tons of fuel from the ship Anatoly Kolotkin became an absolutely extraordinary event that the Cuban people celebrated in every possible way,” he added.

He went on to stress, however, that this shipment did solve the crisis

“More than 96,000 Cubans, including 11,000 children, are waiting for surgeries due to the lack of electricity,” he stated.

He called for global solidarity and highlighted the need for greater multilateral cooperation, stating that dialogue and respect for the sovereignty of peoples are the only way to preserve peace.

With Cuba relying heaviliy on imports for its energy needs, Venezuela and Mexico had been Cuba’s top oil suppliers. Venezuela’s last shipment arrived in December 2025. On January 3, 2026 Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was captured by the United States. Mexico’s last shipment arrived shortly after that. Apart from a small shipment from Jamaica in February Cuba has not received any fuel until late March, when Russian tanker Anatoly Kolodkin arrived in Cuba carrying around 700,000 barrels of crude.
