White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Donald Trump was ‘not going to set a deadline’ for the latest Iran ceasefire as she spoke with reporters in DC on Wednesday.
“I know there’s been some anonymous source reporting that there was maybe a three to five day deadline. That is not true,” she claimed. “The president has not set a deadline himself. Ultimately, he will dictate the timetable. And again, he is satisfied with the naval blockade and he understands that Iran is in a very weak position. And the cards are in President Trump’s hands right now.”
On Tuesday, Trump said he would extend the ceasefire – set to expire on Wednesday night – “until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal.”
He also said the naval blockade of Iran would continue and that the ceasefure would be extended “until such time as their proposal is submitted, and discussions are concluded, one way or the other.”
The second round of talks this week in Islamabad did not materialise. Earlier Trump said he was sending a delegation – and that he didn’t want to extend the ceasefire – while Tehran did not confirm participation. The US and Iran agreed a two-week ceasefire on April 8, following five and a half weeks of fighting – and a global energy crisis surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. Both sides have accused each other of violating the truce. Talks were held in Islamabad on April 11-12 with no breakthrough.
