Powerful Quake Hits Japan
A powerful earthquake struck southern Japan earlier on Tuesday, sending residents scrambling for safety and shaking Kumamoto’s iconic castle.

Footage shows a resident rushing through an apartment as the building sways, while smoke rises near the castle in the aftermath of the tremor.
Kumamoto Castle, one of Japan’s best-known historic landmarks, dates back to 1467. It was expanded in 1607 by warlord Kato Kiyomasa.
Damage And Casualties Reported
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi urged residents to evacuate and protect themselves as authorities assessed reports of injuries, fires, power cuts and damage to roads, bridges and buildings.

Several deaths have been confirmed following the collapse of a shopping centre in Kumamoto, with the death toll expected to rise significantly, while more than 100 people are injured across the region.
The US Geological Survey revised its initial magnitude estimate from 7.1 to 6.8.
