Parliament Session Chaos

Chaos erupted in South Africa’s National Assembly on Thursday, with opposition benches staging a dramatic walkout after the speaker refused to discuss the ‘Phala Phala’ scandal involving President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Footage shows members of the EFF, ATM, and MKP parties shouting down parliament speaker Thoko Didiza when she refused to allow an immediate no-confidence vote debate against President Ramaphosa. Party members swiftly exited the session to chants and singing as frustration boiled over.

Speaker Rejects Debate

“I, as the Speaker of this House, have the duty to ensure the smooth conduct. I’ve listened to your request, and I’ve indicated that that does not arise,” declared Thoko Didiza.

For his part, Ramaphosa addressed the assembly, paying tribute to the victims of floods that have hit several provinces this past week.

“We remember those who have lost their lives, their homes and their livelihoods to the severe flooding that our country has been facing in the past week. At least 10 lives have been lost, and thousands of people have now been displaced. I should say that our thoughts and our prayers are with the families who are mourning their loved ones,” said Ramaphosa.

Court Orders Investigation

Last week, the Constitutional Court ordered the establishment of an impeachment committee to investigate whether Ramaphosa committed serious violations related to the 2020 Phala Phala scandal, in which $580,000 was stolen from his private farm.

The South African Presidency confirmed President Cyril Ramaphosa will comply with the ruling, reaffirming that ‘no one is above the law’ and citing respect for judicial independence. The president has denied any wrongdoing.
