Opening Match Victory
Thousands of fans celebrated in the streets around Mexico City Stadium in Mexico City’s Tlalpan borough on Thursday after Mexico defeated South Africa in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Supporters gathered along Calzada de Tlalpan and around the Mercado de Huipulco area, where celebrations continued for several hours after the final whistle. Footage shows fans chanting, singing, and waving Mexican flags as green, white, and red flares lit up the night sky to mark the host nation’s 2-0 victory.
Fans Share Hope
The victory sparked scenes of jubilation among supporters, many of whom expressed hope that the national team can go further than in previous World Cup campaigns.
“Hopefully they stay on that good path and make it to the fifth match, which they have not reached,” commented Luis Angel Morales, a fan.

For Ivan Morales, the celebrations were about more than just the result, offering a chance to share his passion for football and mark a historic day for Mexican sport.
“I am having a good time. I came because I love football, I love my city, I love Mexico. So to support in every way possible,” he said.
Room For Improvement
Despite the victory, some supporters voiced there was still room for improvement ahead of Mexico’s remaining group-stage matches.

“They played well today, but in the end it kind of disappointed us a little,” remarked a fan, Ivan Morales, asserting, “But yes, there goes Mexico, there it goes little by little, Mexico.”
Citywide Celebrations
Families, groups of friends and visitors from across Mexico and abroad joined the post-match celebrations, reflecting the excitement generated by both the start of the World Cup and the host nation’s winning start to the tournament.
