Fans Fill Square

Thousands of Republic of Korea (ROK) football fans gathered at Seoul’s Gwanghwamun Square on Thursday to watch the Taeguk Warriors take on South Africa in their final World Cup Group A match, only to leave disappointed after a 1-0 defeat.

Footage shows supporters chanting and cheering throughout the match, groaning as chances went begging before falling silent when South Africa scored the decisive goal. Despite the result, fans embraced the lively atmosphere as thousands watched together in the city centre.

“It’s my first time joining a public street cheering event, and it’s been really enjoyable to support the team in person,” one said.

South Africa Secures Victory

The tie in Monterrey saw South Africa seal victory through Thapelo Maseko’s 63rd-minute strike, earning a 1-0 win that lifted Bafana Bafana into second place and into the Round of 32 alongside group winners Mexico.

Back in Seoul, supporters struggled to hide their disappointment.

“I thought we would definitely beat South Africa, so I’m really disappointed by the result. It almost makes me want to cry. Still, I’m grateful to our players for giving their all on the pitch,” one shared.

“We made too many mistakes in the first half, despite having plenty of opportunities. What disappointed me most was that there didn’t seem to be any real tactical adjustments in the second half,” she added.

Qualification Hopes Continue

The ROK must now wait for the remaining group-stage results to discover whether they progress as one of the eight best third-placed teams.

South Africa will next face another of this year’s host nations, Canada, in California on June 28 after Canada qualified as runners-up in Group B.
