Girl Rescued Alive
Rescue teams managed to pull a 14-year-old girl out alive from the rubble of the San Bernardino parish in Caracas, Venezuela, after a powerful earthquake shook much of the country on Wednesday afternoon.
Footage shows rescuers carrying a teenage girl alive on a stretcher after pulling her from the rubble following Venezuela’s powerful earthquakes.
The rescue came after several hours of work at the collapsed site, as emergency crews stabilised the teenager before taking her to a nearby medical centre.
Her mother, Alexandra Pedrero, described the panic after the building gave way.
“This was something unexpected. And when the tremor started <…> I couldn’t figure out how to come asking for help so they could bring me. And when I looked, I saw my daughter trapped,” the woman recounted.
The girl remains under medical observation.
Search Efforts Continue
Local media reported that several people had been rescued alive from collapsed buildings, as search teams continued digging through debris in Caracas and other affected areas.
The US Geological Survey reported two powerful earthquakes striking northern Venezuela within seconds of each other, first a magnitude 7.2 tremor, followed by a stronger magnitude 7.5 quake. Both were centred near Yumare, close to the Montalban-Moron area in Carabobo state, at shallow depths.
The shaking was felt across Caracas and several north-central states, sending residents into the streets and damaging buildings, offices and residential blocks.
Aftershock Risk Remains
Venezuela’s seismological agency, FUNVISIS, urged people to follow official information as the risk of aftershocks remained.
Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello said emergency situations had been reported in Caracas, Miranda, Aragua, Carabobo, Trujillo and La Guaira.
Preliminary official figures reported by international media put the toll at at least 32 dead and more than 700 injured, with authorities warning that rescue and damage assessments were still under way.
Deadly Quake Impact
Venezuela’s last earthquake of similar magnitude struck in 2018, when a magnitude 7.3 quake with its epicentre near Sucre State was felt across parts of the Caribbean and South America.
