Life After 1,000 Days
Displaced Palestinians sheltering in the Islamic University in Gaza City have issued desperate pleas for help, describing a daily struggle for safety, food and necessities as 1,000 days pass since the outbreak of war.
For many of those sheltering, the destruction has become a daily reality, with little hope that the fighting will end soon.

“The war has now lasted for around a thousand days, and I believe it will not end anytime soon. […] There are no positive signs on the horizon suggesting that it is nearing an end. There are simply no indications of a breakthrough or an imminent end to the war,” shared displaced resident Ahmed Al-Zuwaid.
“Before the war, we lived a stable life. As people say, it was like living in paradise. Each of us had a home, a job, a car, and lived a normal life with our wife and children. But all of that disappeared. I lost my wife and four of my children. I spent a year and a half in detention, I have nothing left,” he added.
Growing Humanitarian Crisis
Others at the site described Gaza as a place stripped of safety, routine and the basic conditions needed to live.
“On the 1000th day since October 7, the people of Gaza have lost safety and stability. Children and adults alike have lost the basic necessities of life they once knew. Everything that was beautiful has vanished, and today there is nothing left in Gaza but destruction, darkness, pain, and sorrow,” said Wafaa Abu Jar, a displaced person from Gaza.

The hardship is being felt across the Strip. On Tuesday, Gaza’s Deputy Minister of Social Development, Riyad Al-Bitar, said indicators of famine had returned, adding that aid entering through the crossings was meeting no more than 25 percent of the population’s needs.
War And Its Toll
Gaza Civil Defence also released a report marking 1,000 days of war, saying 145 of its personnel had been killed and 347 others injured during the conflict. It said its teams, missions and facilities had come under direct attack.
The war began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led attacks on Israel killed 1,139 people, most of them civilians, and saw more than 200 others abducted.

Israel responded with a major military campaign in Gaza, including airstrikes and a ground offensive. Gaza health authorities say 73,051 Palestinians have been killed and 173,437 others injured at the time of this report.
In January, US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff announced the start of the second phase of former President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan to end the conflict in Gaza. The plan includes moving from a ceasefire towards disarmament, forming a technocratic administration and beginning reconstruction.
