Tokyo Protest Rally
Crowds gathered around Tokyo’s Shibuya Scramble Crossing on Sunday, demanding Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s resignation and opposing efforts to revise Japan’s pacifist Constitution.
Footage shows protesters marching through Shibuya with anti-war placards, waving Japanese and Palestinian flags and chanting ‘No war! No hate!’
“Those who are currently turning a blind eye or are unaware of the situation, realise that our own lives are under threat and that we are facing a difficult situation,” a protester said.
Opposition To Military Expansion
Another demonstrator called for international support to stop Japan from becoming what he described as a ‘militaristic state’.
“Japan is turning into a nation that is rapidly expanding its military. This is the fault of Prime Minister Takaichi,” he said.
“Takaichi’s approach to politics is just terrible. I want her to govern in a way that truly brings happiness to everyone,” another added.
Article 9 Debate Continues
Demonstrators say revising Article 9, which renounces war, alongside rising defence spending and expanded security powers, would erode Japan’s post-war pacifist principles.
Any amendment to Article 9 would need the support of at least two-thirds of the members of each house of Japan’s parliament before being put to a national referendum.
