Fans Fill Stadium
Japanese supporters expressed optimism despite acknowledging the challenge ahead after the Samurai Blue drew 1-1 with Sweden to finish runners-up in Group F and book their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage.
Footage filmed on Thursday shows Japanese and Swedish fans entering the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, ahead of the match before supporters shared their reactions following the final whistle.
Fans were already looking ahead to a Round of 32 clash with Brazil, describing the five-time world champions as formidable opponents while expressing confidence that Japan could cause an upset.
Fans Stay Hopeful
“All games are unpredictable. Nothing is guaranteed,” said supporter Johnny Itaka. “Brazil is really good, and Japan has also been coming up with really good games. Let’s hope for the best.”
“It was so awesome,” said Hito Miaha. “Japan wins the next game. I hope they will get a good game again.”
Yuriko Morita said Japan’s previous victory over Brazil in a friendly would count for little at the World Cup.
“It’s going to be very tough because we won a friendly match last time,” she said, adding, “But we’re expecting a lot from the Japanese national team.”
Another fan echoed the sentiment, saying, “I’m happy that Japan will move on to the knockout stage, but it’s going to be very challenging against Brazil.”
Knockout Stage Awaits
Another supporter remained optimistic despite the difficult draw.
“Brazil is a very great team,” the man said. “I really think Japan has a good chance.”
Daizen Maeda gave Japan the lead in the 56th minute before Anthony Elanga equalised for Sweden, sending the Samurai Blue into the newly expanded 32-team knockout stage as group runners-up.
