Russia Supports ASEAN
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reiterated Moscow’s commitment to support ASEAN’s role in the Asia-Pacific region, speaking at the Russia-ASEAN ministerial meeting in Pasay, Metro Manila, on Wednesday.
“ASEAN is our reliable partner and like-minded ally,” Lavrov said. “For our part, we consistently support ASEAN’s central role in all regional affairs and do our utmost to strengthen the inter-state relations framework centred on the association and founded on the principles of international law, openness, equality, and, above all, respect for the interests of all participants.”
Regional Cooperation Plans
He also said that the Russia-ASEAN summit held in Kazan in June had reaffirmed the commitment to establishing a more just and sustainable multipolar world order, strengthening the security architecture in the Asia-Pacific region, and enhancing comprehensive co-operation.
“Our leaders reached important agreements covering politics and security, joint efforts to address new threats and challenges, and the development of trade, economic, investment, cultural, educational and humanitarian ties. We also see very promising prospects in areas such as food and energy security, digital transformation and the platform economy,” he added.
Lavrov Visits Philippines
Lavrov arrived in the Philippines on Tuesday to take part in events organised by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). During his three-day visit, Lavrov is expected to participate in the Russia-ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, the East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and the ASEAN Regional Forum.
