Israelis Split Over Netanyahu

Israelis in Tel Aviv on Monday appeared divided over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government’s military campaigns in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran, as political parties gear up for polls.

“I am convinced that Bibi will bring the country to an extreme situation before the election. Whether it is another war or another intifada in the territories […] he would do everything to prevent the elections from being held in an orderly manner so that he does not lose them,” a critic alleged.

“The war with Iran, of course, was a lost cause from the start. The Iranian nuclear programme is a fait accompli,” he claimed.

Supporters Defend Netanyahu

Another resident voiced more confidence regarding Netanyahu.

“Israel is not an easy place to manage,” a supporter said. “He’s going to win again, and it’s good, I think, for the US and for Israel anyway. He has experience.”

A third resident was critical of Israel’s recent military campaigns, arguing that fighting should have been followed by negotiations while the country had leverage.

“I think they forgot in our wonderful country that wars are ended at the table and not by active fighting. As in, you need to start, give a blow, and then when the blow is strong enough, sit down for meaningful negotiations, and have leverage to bring the reality to where we need it,” she said.

Israel Heads Toward Elections

Netanyahu and his government have entered campaign mode as he fights to keep his coalition in power after the Knesset dissolved on July 17 ahead of elections on October 27.

It will be Israel’s first national vote since the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023. The vote follows years of conflict in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran.
