Rescue Teams Deploy To Gyirong
Chinese rescue teams were seen deployed from Lhasa Gonggar International Airport on Thursday as authorities stepped up search and relief efforts following the devastating mudslide in Gyirong County, southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region.
Footage shows rescue workers gathering inside the airport before boarding buses, as well as cargo being unloaded from aircraft and trucks transporting emergency equipment and relief supplies.
According to the National Fire and Rescue Administration, 681 firefighters, backed by 113 vehicles, 13 rescue dogs, and 47 drones, have reached Gyirong to conduct search-and-rescue operations.
Thirteen categories of equipment, including protective, rescue and operational support materials, were also flown into Lhasa for onward transport to the disaster zone.
Emergency Supplies Reach Disaster Zone
Crews are also racing to restore access to affected communities, repairing damaged sections of the G216 highway towards Gyirong Port.
Gyirong County’s Public Security Bureau sent 26 officers who erected 24 emergency tents, while the Xigaze detachment of the People’s Armed Police transported more than 450 sets of tents to the disaster area.
Relief supplies reaching Gyirong Town include 20 tonnes of highland barley, 50 tonnes of rice, 20 tonnes of flour and one tonne of cooking oil. Authorities have also delivered more than 1,100 tents, 2,300 folding beds and 8,000 quilts.
Rescue Efforts Intensify
Rescue efforts follow the August 26 Himalayan disaster, which has killed at least 543 people across Nepal and China, with more than 1,500 still missing on both sides of the border.
Nepal has reported 538 deaths and more than 977 people missing, while five people have been killed and more than 558 remain unaccounted for in China’s Gyirong County, including 260 foreign nationals.
