Suu Kyi Meets ICRC
Myanmar’s military authorities released images of detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Monday after she met the International Committee of the Red Cross’s (ICRC) Myanmar representative.
Stills released from Naypyidaw show Suu Kyi greeting ICRC Representative Arnaud de Baecque before the pair sit down for talks. She is later seen cutting a birthday cake bearing the message, ‘Happy Birthday Aunty Suu 19.6.2026’.
The military said the meeting took place on Monday morning but gave no details about the location or what was discussed. The ICRC had not publicly commented on the visit at the time of publication.
Years Under Detention
Suu Kyi has been detained since the military seized power in February 2021, ousting her elected government.
She was moved from prison to house arrest in April 2026 under a religious amnesty after serving part of multiple sentences handed down by military-controlled courts.
Myanmar remains gripped by conflict more than five years after the coup, with fighting continuing across much of the country despite repeated international calls for a political solution.
Calls For Dialogue
ASEAN has urged dialogue among all parties, while Myanmar’s opposition National Unity Government maintains that any meaningful political process must begin with Suu Kyi’s unconditional release.
