The UK’s Church of England officially inaugurated its first female leader, as Dr Sarah Mullally became the Archbishop of Canterbury on Monday.

Footage shows her first sermon from Canterbury Cathedral, with the Prince and Princess of Wales, William and Catherine among the 2,000 in attendance.

There have been 105 previous Archbishops since 579 AD. All have been men, with women only allowed to become priests in 1994. The CoE split from Rome in 1534, due to a row with Henry XVIII over the Pope’s refusal to annul his marriage.

Mullally’s predecessor Justin Welby quit in disgrace in 2024 following his handling of a sexual abuse case involving a prolific child abuser. A report found he ‘could and should’ have reported the perpetrator as early as 2013. Welby said “it is very clear that I must take personal and institutional responsibility”.
