Tianwan Plant Expansion

Rosatom head Alexei Likhachev said that China’s Tianwan NPP would become the “largest and most powerful plant on the planet” after the commissioning of its seventh and eighth power units, during an interview in Beijing on Friday.

“It is important to note that, following the commissioning of the seventh and eighth units at Tianwan, this plant will become the largest in the world. With eight gigawatt-class units and nine gigawatts of net electrical output, it will be the largest and most powerful plant on the planet,” he said.

Likhachev also stressed that commissioning operations at the new Russian-built power units at the Tianwan and Xudapu NPPs were also expected to begin soon.

Russia China Cooperation

“At both sites, two blocks [modern water-cooled water-moderated power reactor design] VVER-1200 units are being constructed, and at both sites we expect commissioning operations to begin on the first units this year, literally within the coming weeks,” he added.

Russia’s Atommash multidisciplinary engineering company has been manufacturing equipment for the Tianwan and Xudapu plants in close co-operation with Chinese specialists. The Xudapu Nuclear Power Plant is located in the city of Huludao, Liaoning Province.

In 2019, Russia and China signed a general contract for the construction of the third and fourth units with Generation III+ VVER-1200 reactors, as well as an agreement on nuclear fuel supplies. The units are scheduled to be commissioned in 2027-2028.

Future Nuclear Development

The Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant is located in Jiangsu Province. Its first two units have been operating since 2007, while the third and fourth units entered service in 2018. Rosatom is currently continuing the construction of the seventh and eighth units, which will also use Russian Generation III+ reactors.
