Typhoon Hits Coast
Typhoon Dolphin has slammed into China’s eastern coast, bringing powerful winds and torrential rain to Zhejiang Province after authorities issued their highest-level typhoon warning.
Footage shows heavy rain lashing Zhoushan, Shanghai and parts of Zhejiang, with water surging across roads and flooding some areas.
Storm Brings Disruption
Dolphin made landfall near Yuhuan in the city of Taizhou at around 17:30 local time on Sunday, packing winds of about 151 kilometres per hour and disrupting transport across the region.
China’s National Meteorological Center issued a red typhoon alert, the highest level in the country’s warning system, as the storm closed in on the coast.
Mass Evacuations Ordered
Authorities moved hundreds of thousands of people to safety ahead of landfall. Around 390,000 people were evacuated in Taizhou and more than 30,000 from vulnerable areas in Shanghai, while ferry and cruise services were suspended in Zhejiang.
More than 1,300 flights were cancelled at Shanghai’s Hongqiao and Pudong airports.
Flood Risks Continue
Heavy rain remains a major threat as Dolphin pushes inland. Forecasters say some areas could receive between 200 and 400 millimetres over several days, raising the risk of severe flooding and landslides.
