Village Destroyed By Flames
Burnt-out homes, wrecked vehicles and blackened trees line the streets of Le Porge in France’s Gironde department, after the Saumos wildfire tore through the community and forced residents to flee.
Resident Benoit Gauthier accused the authorities of abandoning the village as the flames closed in.
“The state has completely abandoned us. We feel helpless. They did nothing for us,” Gauthier said. “We did everything ourselves.”
Footage filmed on Thursday shows entire properties reduced to rubble along roads once lined with homes.
“We are going to file a complaint against the state for abandonment – for abandoning our village and practically leaving us to burn on Thursday night,” Gauthier said.
Residents Demand Answers
More than 190 properties were reportedly destroyed in the location, making it one of the communities worst hit by the fire.
Residents have also spoken of a ‘great sense of unity’ as neighbours worked together to protect properties, support displaced families and begin clearing the destruction.
More than 500 residents have joined a collective seeking answers over the evacuation and the deployment of firefighting resources. Its lawyer said a criminal complaint was likely, while civil and administrative action was also being considered.
Regional authorities have rejected claims that Le Porge was deliberately deprived of resources, saying the protection of human life remained their priority and promising a transparent review once the emergency was over.
Rebuilding After Disaster
With hundreds of residents displaced, Gauthier said the rebuilding process should reshape both the village and the way its community lives together.
“We need to rethink life in our village and the way we build, and above all, ensure that the sense of community we have rediscovered here is reflected in this new way of living,” he noted.
According to reports, the fire burnt around 42,000 hectares after erupting near Saumos on July 22. Authorities said it remained stabilised on July 29, although crews were still tackling new outbreaks and securing hundreds of kilometres of fire perimeter.
More than 3,000 firefighters were reportedly deployed at the height of the operation. Two firefighters died after their vehicle was surrounded by flames in Gironde, while at least 110 were injured during the fire.
Europe has seen record-breaking wildfires this summer, with Spain and France among the hardest hit and hundreds of thousands of people forced to evacuate. French President Emmanuel Macron claimed the ‘unprecedented’ blazes were the ‘toughest since the Second World War’.
It comes as Europe was also scorched by heatwaves, with antiquated infrastructure breaking down and politicians accused of ignoring decades of warnings.
