Airport Attack Aftermath

At least 63 people sustained injuries, leaving some staff and travellers in serious condition, amid the Iranian attack on Kuwait City airport, according to the Ministry of Health of Kuwait.

Footage released on social media on Wednesday, shows responders working at the smoke-filled hall with burning fire and debris scattered under a hole in the roof.

Meanwhile, the Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the recent attacks on the country killed one, noting that ballistic missiles and drones were used. In addition to the airport, the attacks targeted critical infrastructure and caused damage to diplomatic missions.

For its part, Kuwait’s Civil Aviation Authority announced the suspension of flights to the airport and the diversion of air traffic to alternative airports, pending completion of necessary procedures and confirmation of readiness to resume operations.

Later on the same day, the authorities confirmed that flights had resumed at the airport but through Terminal 4.

Regional Condemnation Grows

The attack drew widespread Gulf and Arab condemnation, with Kuwait, the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain denouncing the Iranian strikes in the ‘strongest terms’, describing them as a ‘flagrant violation of the sovereignty of the State of Kuwait’. Egypt and Jordan also condemned the attacks.

On Wednesday morning, IRGC announced that it had carried out a military response following a US attack on an oil tanker near the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday evening.

It said the strikes targeted the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet and an airbase.

Conflicting Military Claims

In response, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) denied the IRGC’s claims that the Fifth Fleet headquarters and another military airbase in the region had been targeted.

“Two Iranian missiles launched toward Kuwait fell before reaching their targets or disintegrated in the air, while three missiles fired toward Bahrain were immediately intercepted by US and Bahraini air defences,” CENTCOM stated.

Tensions Remain High

These developments come amid ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States, despite a ceasefire that came into effect on April 8 to halt the fighting. Meanwhile, talks between the two sides are continuing but have yet to produce significant progress.
