Musk Predicts AI Dominance
Elon Musk said artificial intelligence could make human programmers ‘unable to compete’ with machines as early as next year, as he addressed the G20 Innovation Ministerial by video link on Tuesday.
“So at some at some point – next year is my prediction – software will be so good, AI software will be so good that it will be Stockfish-level good, meaning that it is impossible for a human to compete in writing software with AI. But like AI will just crush all humans at software,” he said.
AI Could Crush Human Programmers
Musk pointed to software development as one of the clearest examples, comparing AI’s potential dominance to Stockfish, one of the world’s strongest chess engines.
“So Stockfish is a chess programme that can beat the world’s best chess players very easily. In fact, at this point, you could run Stockfish on your phone and beat Magnus Carlsen at chess,” the tech billionaire said.
Musk also predicted AI could increase the global economy by 20 to 30 per cent and become capable of handling almost any task carried out entirely in the digital world by the end of next year.
AI May Boost Global Economy
“AI will probably increase the global economy by 20 to 30 per cent. That’s my rough estimate. Meaning on the order of 20 to $30 trillion per year. And, and AI will be able to do anything digital, anything that does not require shaping of atoms by hand probably by the end of next year,” Musk said.

His forecast would put that level of AI capability in 2027. The predicted 20 to 30 per cent boost to the global economy, which Musk put at roughly $20 trillion to $30 trillion a year, remains his own estimate rather than an established economic projection.
Stockfish 18 was released in January, with its developers describing it as stronger than any human player, even when running on older or lower-end hardware.
G20 Meeting Focuses AI
The two-day G20 Innovation Ministerial runs from September 1 to 2, with Nvidia chief Jensen Huang and OpenAI chief Sam Altman also scheduled to take part. The meeting is being held during the United States’ 2026 G20 presidency, as Washington pushes for a light-touch approach to AI regulation.
