Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi addressed concerns surrounding US President Donald Trump’s upcoming visit to Beijing, tensions in the Middle East, and cooperation with Russia, stressing dialogue, restraint and strategic coordination, speaking at a press conference on Sunday.

“The lack of interaction between the two countries will only lead to misunderstandings and misjudgments, and a move towards conflict and confrontation will further harm the world,” Wang said in Beijing.

He noted that both countries are major powers and ‘neither can change the other, but we can change the way we interact’.

“That is, to uphold mutual respect, safeguard the bottom line of peaceful coexistence, and strive for a future of win-win cooperation,” Wang stated, adding that such an approach “is in the interests of both peoples and meets the expectations of the international community.”

Addressing recent military strikes carried out by the US and Israel against Iran, Wang said, “Facing the Middle East engulfed in war, I want to say that this is a war that should never have happened and one that benefits no party.”

“The history of the Middle East repeatedly tells the world that force is not the solution,” Wang added, warning that “armed conflict only breeds new hatred and creates new crises.”

The Chinese top diplomat also said that Beijing calls for “an immediate cessation of military operations to prevent further escalation and the spread of the conflict”.

On cooperation with Russia, Wang said China-Russia ties had ‘remained steadfast and stable’ despite a complex international environment.

He said the strategic partnership between Beijing and Moscow was built on ‘equality, respect, and mutual benefit’, reflecting ‘the essence of a new type of international relations’ and pointing toward ‘a new type of major-power relations’.

Trump is expected to travel to China from March 31 to April 2, according to the White House, in what will be the first official visit to Beijing by a US president since Trump’s last trip there in 2017.
