Nigeria Boat Capsize Kills 52
Survivors and relatives in Nigeria’s Sokoto State shared their grief after a boat carrying farmers and workers to rice farms capsized, killing 52 people, including 40 children, according to reports.
Footage shows family members gathering near the riverside where some of the dead were buried.
“Yesterday, around 9–10 a.m., children, women and elderly men boarded a canoe to go to their farms. Unfortunately, the canoe capsized,” eyewitness Salisu Umar Goronyo said, adding that there were ‘at least 80 people on board’.

Survivor Abdullahi Karani said residents joined the rescue effort after the boat overturned.
“We were on the boat when it capsized. We made efforts to rescue some of the victims before other people arrived to support us in the rescue operation, during which many bodies were recovered,” he said.
Families Mourn Victims
Goronyo said his own family lost 10 relatives, adding that many of the victims were young women who were expected to marry this year.

The boat capsized near Gorau in Goronyo Local Government Area while passengers were travelling to rice farms.
Rescue Efforts Continue
Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency later put the confirmed death toll at 52, as rescue and recovery operations continued.
