Hundreds of protesters gathered in Paris to demonstrate against a proposed antisemitism bill, warning it could restrict freedom of expression and lead to the criminalisation of political speech.

Footage shows protesters waving Palestinian flags and holding banners reading ‘No to the Yadan law’ and ‘Genocide in Gaza’, as they accused the government of expanding legal pressure on activists speaking out about the conflict in the Middle East.

One of the participants accused French authorities of political complicity in the broader conflict.

“We already have many laws that punish, that repress any kind of solidarity with the Palestinian people under the guise of fighting terrorism,” said a protester.

“France is on a path of fascisation. And here we clearly see the harassment. […] And now, unfortunately, we have the legislative plan coming which aims to criminalise criticism of Israel,” added another.

Critics of the bill argue it would further limit public debate and expand legal boundaries around speech connected to the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, while supporters say it is necessary to strengthen tools against antisemitism and hate speech.

The controversial draft bill was withdrawn hours before it was scheduled to be debated in the National Assembly on Thursday due to a lack of political support in its current form and widespread opposition. A citizen petition opposing the so-called ‘Yadan Law’ reached a record-breaking 700,000 signatures.
