Peru Earthquake Hits South
A magnitude 7.2 earthquake was recorded on Thursday in southern Peru, with its epicentre 35 kilometres north of Coracora, Parinacochas province, Ayacucho region, and at a depth of 108 kilometres, according to the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP).
Images shared on social media show an intense dust cloud caused by landslides on the hillsides of Pausa, the capital of the province of Paucar del Sara Sara.
Landslides Reported After Tremor
The tremor was also felt in Arequipa, Ica, Cusco, Apurimac and Huancavelica, where landslides were reported, albeit with moderate intensity. The Peruvian Navy ruled out a tsunami risk along the coast.
The mayor of Parinacochas, Tony Reyes Anampa, called for support from regional and national authorities, as many of the homes near Coracora are made of adobe and corrugated iron, which makes them more vulnerable to the quake.
Authorities Urge Caution
The National Institute of Civil Defence (INDECI) asked the public to remain calm and stay in safe areas in case of possible aftershocks. For the moment, no fatalities have been reported in the country.
