PTI Protest Turns Tense
Pakistani police arrested several Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters during a protest in Karachi on Wednesday demanding the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Footage shows officers firing tear gas to disperse demonstrators near the Karachi Press Club, before detaining several protesters.
“Three years have passed, and despite all this oppression, your morale remains high,” one PTI supporter said while being escorted away by police.
Police Disperse Demonstrators
Pakistani media reported clashes as police moved to disperse the crowd. PTI said more than 10 workers were arrested in Karachi, including the party’s Sindh general secretary, Dr Masroor Sial. Police confirmed that some PTI workers and leaders had been detained but did not provide a figure.
The protest marked three years since Khan was jailed on 5 August 2023. PTI supporters have staged repeated demonstrations since he was removed from office in a parliamentary vote of no confidence in April 2022.
Khan Supporters Demand Release
Khan is serving a 14-year sentence in the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case. In December 2025, he and his wife, Bushra Bibi, were also sentenced to 17 years in a separate corruption case involving the purchase of a valuable jewellery set at well below its assessed market value.
Some of Khan’s earlier convictions have been suspended or overturned, but he remains in prison and has faced more than 180 cases. He denies wrongdoing and says the cases are politically motivated.
