Supporters of rapper-turned-politician Balendra Shah gathered in large numbers outside the party office in Kathmandu on Saturday to celebrate the sweeping victory of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) in Nepal’s first general elections since last year’s violent Gen Z-led uprising.

Footage shows RSP supporters celebrating and dancing outside the party office. The office gate is seen guarded by riot police. Later, RSP candidate Toshima Karki, who won from Lalitpur-3 constituency, is greeted by supporters before rallying in an open car, waving and addressing crowds gathered along the road.

“We have to take this victory as our happiness and all Nepalese victories, as we had an unstable government till now,” said Bikash Paudel, an RSP supporter.

Despite their joy, supporters warned the incoming-prime minister not to repeat the mistakes of the ousted CPN-UML.

“If we have a one-party rule in this nation for five years, it is going to be good, and I hope it will be way better than before,” said Paudel.

“If this government fails to perform in these 5 years. They are going to face the same treatment. That’s why this government must do good as high expectations of the people can be seen clearly,” he added.

According to official results and projections released by Nepal’s Election Commission, RSP has secured a majority in the direct parliamentary elections and is heading for a landslide.

Shah defeated four-time former prime minister KP Sharma Oli in his own constituency of Jhapa-5, securing 68,348 votes to 18,734.

The election chose a new 275-member House of Representatives, including 165 directly elected seats and 110 through proportional representation.

Last September’s youth-led demonstrations, organised loosely under a Gen Z banner, began as protests against a brief social media ban but rapidly expanded to showcase broader dissatisfaction with corruption and a struggling economy.
