Granada Earthquake Hits

A magnitude 5 earthquake struck Granada and its metropolitan area in southern Spain early on Saturday, damaging buildings and sending residents into the streets.

The quake struck near Alhendin at 01:04 local time (23:04 GMT on Friday). No casualties were reported, while emergency services received more than 200 alerts, according to reports citing Andalusian authorities.

Footage shows cracked walls, fallen masonry and destroyed vehicles, with police tape sealing off affected buildings and streets.

Residents Describe Panic

“I was in the living room, and I was on the sofa, and suddenly everything came crashing down. Everything is on the floor right now. That was horrible,” one resident said.

“It was impossible to sleep. That was a weird earthquake, with too much noise. Honestly, I am very scared,” added a second.

The tremor was felt across much of Andalusia, leading authorities to activate the Emergency Phase of the regional seismic emergency plan.

Authorities Issue Warnings

The Granada area had already experienced recent seismic activity. A magnitude 3.7 earthquake was recorded near La Zubia on Friday afternoon, followed by smaller tremors, according to Spain’s National Geographic Institute.

Authorities urged residents to stay away from damaged buildings and avoid unnecessary journeys.
