Wildfire Spreads Rapidly
Firefighters battled the raging Tirig wildfires on Sunday as Spain’s Castellon province continues to burn, forcing the evacuation of 700 residents of the nearby town of Cati.
Footage released by the Consorci Bombers Diputacio Castello shows firefighters tackling the fierce blaze closing in around them, with fire engines also seen moving down country lanes towards the site of the inferno.
Residents Evacuated Safely
Firefighters are battling two main fronts in the Tirig wildfire. The northern sector is affecting Cati, while crews reported improved conditions around Tirig to the south.
In Cati, around 700 residents were ordered to evacuate at about 16:30 local time (15.30 GMT) on Sunday after receiving an emergency alert, with Spain’s Military Emergency Unit (UME) assisting locals to depart for Xert, where accommodation was arranged at a sports centre for the night.
Emergency Response Expands
The evacuation replaced an earlier lockdown order issued on Saturday as the fire advanced towards the town.
By Sunday evening, the blaze had burned about 684 hectares within a 19-kilometre perimeter, according to information released after a meeting of the regional emergency coordination centre. Around 300 personnel, 19 aircraft and 50 ground units were involved in the operation.
Difficult Conditions Continue
The UME was deployed after the Tirig fire was raised to level two on Saturday. Authorities said difficult terrain and changing conditions had complicated efforts to contain the blaze.
