A donation of 43 tonnes of various food products, provided by the Government of Mexico, arrived in the province of Mayabeque on Tuesday as part of humanitarian aid to Cuba.

Footage shows several people unloading boxes of food from transport vehicles. Some of the donations are intended for pregnant women, older adults and children, according to authorities.

“There are sweet biscuits, there are tins of peaches in syrup, those products,” said Jose Antonio Castellano, Director General of the Food Wholesale Company (EMPA) of Mayabeque.

During the day, residents came to request some of the donated food items, such as tins of sardines and bags of rice, while expressing their gratitude to the Government of Mexico for the assistance.

“Thank you very much for the donation you made to the children,” said Elizabeth Alvarez, a beneficiary who attended the distribution event with her young son.

On 12 February, two ships sent by Mexico arrived in Havana with 814 tonnes of humanitarian aid to help meet the basic needs of the Cuban people during the energy crisis on the island.

On Tuesday, Cuba’s Minister of Domestic Trade reported that Mexico’s donation will benefit people in the provinces of Mayabeque, Artemisa and Havana, with priority given to children aged 0 to 13, adults over 65, pregnant women and people in vulnerable situations.

The Government of Mexico has reiterated its support for Cuba after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order threatening tariffs on countries that supply oil to the island.
