Trump Praises Football Stars

US President Donald Trump praised football legends Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo on Friday, saying elite players possess a unique quality that sets them apart, while questioning England’s tactical use of captain Harry Kane during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking at a World Cup final reception in New York alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Trump highlighted Messi’s decisive pass during Argentina’s semi-final victory over England.

“I watched that pass that Messi made. I watched Messi, and he was well-guarded, right? Well-guarded. And all of a sudden, he’s standing on the right,” Trump said.

“He had plenty of time. He kicked it. It was within, I would say, a quarter of an inch of being perfect. And that was the end of the game. It was brilliant,” Trump added.

Messi And Ronaldo Talent

Trump said that players like Messi and Ronaldo repeatedly produce moments of brilliance because they have a natural talent.

“These great players, they seem to do that over and over again. They’re just born with something extra special,” he said. “I know that Ronaldo is one of them. I got to know him over the years, and he’s a great guy.”

Trump then turned his attention to England captain Harry Kane, recalling that the two had played golf together in Florida.

“You have a great player in England, who I played golf with, Harry,” Trump said. “They perhaps made a mistake when they made him a defensive player. What do I know about soccer?”

Kane Role Debate Continues

England manager Thomas Tuchel faced criticism after withdrawing attacking players during the final stages of the semi-final against Argentina, allowing the South Americans to control possession and eventually break through.

The German coach defended his decisions, saying he had moved to strengthen the team’s shape after it failed to control the midfield and became ‘too passive’.

The comments came ahead of Sunday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain in New Jersey, while England take on France in the third place playoff on Saturday evening.
