Typhoon Noul Approaches

Authorities across southern China stepped up emergency measures on Saturday as Typhoon Noul intensified and closed in on the coast, forcing evacuations, disrupting transport and sending thousands of fishing vessels racing back to port.

Footage from Shantou in Guangdong province shows fishing fleets packed into local harbours as maritime officials inspect vessels and oversee storm preparations.

In China’s Guangxi region, water authorities began releasing water from reservoirs on Friday to create capacity for the torrential rain expected with the typhoon.

Storm Warning Issued

Noul, the 12th named storm of the year, strengthened from a tropical storm into a typhoon on Saturday morning as it moved towards Guangdong.

China’s National Meteorological Centre said the storm was about 295 kilometres southeast of Shanwei at 02:00 GMT on Saturday, with maximum sustained winds of around 126 kilometres per hour.

Forecasters expected Noul to make landfall between Hong Kong and Lufeng in Guangdong from Saturday night into Sunday morning, bringing destructive winds and torrential rain.

Emergency Measures Expanded

In Shantou, authorities raised the city’s wind emergency response to Level III and issued a yellow typhoon warning.

More than 5,900 fishing vessels returned to port. Officials also brought ashore 262 fish-farm workers, 70 marine ranch employees and 89 people working on offshore wind power projects.

In Guangxi, the Maritime Safety Administration activated Level IV emergency responses for typhoon and flood control.

Maritime authorities in Fangchenggang, Qinzhou and Beihai issued safety warnings to vessels, while northbound shipping through the Qiongzhou Strait was restricted.
