The US House of Representatives voted in favour of the war powers resolution to force US President Donald Trump to seek Congress approval for military action against Iran, in Washington DC on Wednesday.

Four Republicans backed the resolution as the House passed it 215 to 208 in favour.
After the vote, the resolution goes to the Senate, where the measure must be taken up. The conflict, running for more than 90 days, is beyond a threshold that would require the president to seek Congress’s approval to continue waging war under the 1973 War Powers Act.

The White House rejects this and argues that a ceasefire has been in place since April 8. The vote’s impact is symbolic, however, as a two-thirds majority is needed to override a presidential veto.
