Families Search Daily

Dozens of relatives of people missing after the June 24 earthquakes gather daily at a collection centre set up in Caracas, where they place photographs, posters, and contact information to receive news about the whereabouts of their loved ones.

Footage filmed on Monday shows multiple notices displayed in the capital, where people check lists and scan photographs in the hope of finding relatives still unaccounted for.

Hope Amid Uncertainty

“They lived and were there because my daughter had just spoken with their mother ten minutes before, before what happened happened. We do not know whether they lived on the second floor, we do not know whether they got out or are [still] there,” shared Tarcisio Florian, who continues searching for relatives who were in a building affected by the earthquakes.

Despite the uncertainty about his relatives’ whereabouts, Florian said he remains hopeful. “As a good Christian, as a good person, you do not lose hope because, well, it is the last thing we should lose as human beings.”

Duvitzai Camacaro also went to the centre as she searched for Consuelo Berroteran, Chai Berroteran and Breiner Rangel, who she said were in Caraballeda when the earthquakes struck.

“He is my friend, and we are looking for his whole family because they are beloved acquaintances, and we still have not found them. They are in Caraballeda, in the Golf Mar residential building, and heavy machinery still has not arrived there. And rescuers are still needed,” she explained.

Camacaro called the situation in the affected areas ‘extremely complicated’ after having taken part in the search efforts. “We are all very nervous. Down there in La Guaira, it is a very difficult situation, since I went down to try to search, and everything is complicated. Many buildings are collapsing right now,” she recalled.

Death Toll Climbs

Officials stated on Monday that at least 1,719 people had been killed and more than 5,000 injured. 80,505 reports of missing persons have been issued, of whom 15,247 have been located, and 44,658 remain out of contact.
